PURPOSE

Superficial problem analyses lead to solutions that only treat symptoms instead of eliminating root causes. The 5 Whys Template forces teams to dig deeper and reach the actual root of a problem through iterative questioning. It is particularly effective for operational problems and process disruptions.

HOW TO USE

Starting from the observed problem, the team asks 'Why?' five consecutive times, with each answer forming the basis for the next question. The answers are documented in writing, forming a causal chain. Once the root cause is identified, targeted countermeasures are defined.

WHAT IT IS

The 5 Whys Template is a simple yet powerful tool for root cause analysis, originally developed by Sakichi Toyoda at Toyota. It consists of a structured template documenting five consecutive why-questions and their answers. The method is part of the Lean Management toolkit and can be applied without special prior knowledge.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your online shop suddenly has 30% fewer orders, and the team simply says 'customers aren't buying anymore.' With the 5 Whys Template, you ask why five times: Why aren't they buying? Because they abandon checkout. Why? Because load time is too high. Why? Because a new tracking script is blocking the page. This reveals the real cause instead of tinkering with symptoms.
