PURPOSE

The PESTLE analysis is used to systematically scan the external environment of an organization and identify macroeconomic factors influencing the strategy. It helps avoid blind spots regarding external changes and respond early to trends and risks. It is indispensable, particularly when entering new markets or during strategic realignments.

HOW TO USE

Systematically analyze six dimensions of the external environment: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental. Collect current and expected developments for each dimension that could affect your organization. Assess the relevance and time horizon of each factor and derive strategic implications. Ideally combine the results with a SWOT analysis for a complete strategic picture.

WHAT IT IS

The PESTLE analysis is a framework for analyzing the macroeconomic environment of an organization. The six letters stand for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental. The tool extends the older PEST analysis by adding the Legal and Environmental dimensions and is frequently used as a complement to the SWOT analysis.

EXAMPLE

Example: You are planning the market entry of your fintech startup in Brazil and systematically analyze political factors (central bank regulation), economic factors (inflation, exchange rate risk), social factors (high smartphone penetration), technological factors (Pix payment system), legal factors (data protection law LGPD), and environmental conditions using the PESTLE analysis. This way, you recognize early that regulation is your biggest risk.
