S3 Organization Canvas

PURPOSE
The S3 Organization Canvas is used to explore and make visible the overall picture of an organization or organizational unit. It helps to holistically understand the purpose, structure, and functioning of an organization and to identify areas for development. This enables transformation processes at the organizational level to be planned and communicated on a well-founded basis.
HOW TO USE
Fill out the canvas with the leadership team or a representative cross-section of the organization. Start with the primary driver and purpose of the organization and work through the fields covering strategy, structure, value creation, partners, and resources. Use the canvas as a discussion basis for strategic planning processes and organizational changes. Review it regularly in governance meetings.
WHAT IT IS
The S3 Organization Canvas is a tool from Sociocracy 3.0 that maps an organization on a single page. It includes fields for primary driver, purpose, key challenges, key deliverables, customers, partners, value creation, key resources, competencies, strategy, and organizational structure. The canvas is part of the comprehensive S3 framework for agile, sociocratic organizational development.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are an organizational development consultant and use the S3 Organization Canvas with the management team of a mid-sized company to make the organizational purpose, key domains, value creation logic, and governance principles visible on a single page. In doing so, you discover that two departments serve the same customer without knowing about each other.
