Behavior Mapping
Visualizes desired vs. current behaviors for targeted culture change.
PURPOSE
Culture change often remains abstract and hard to grasp when the specific behaviors that need to change are not clearly defined. Behavior Mapping makes the difference between current and desired behavior visible, creating a foundation for targeted interventions. It translates abstract culture goals into observable, measurable behavior.
HOW TO USE
In the first step, desired cultural traits are translated into concrete, observable behaviors. Then current behavior is captured, for example through observation, surveys, or workshops. The gaps between current and target behavior are visualized and prioritized. For the most important behavioral changes, targeted measures and support structures are defined.
WHAT IT IS
Behavior Mapping is a visual method that contrasts desired and current behaviors in an organization. The representation typically shows behavioral dimensions, the current state, and the target behavior on a scale. The tool connects abstract culture goals with concrete behavioral changes and makes progress measurable.
EXAMPLE
Example: Your company wants to establish a feedback culture, but so far nobody gives honest feedback. Using Behavior Mapping, you visualize the current behaviors ('problems are only discussed behind closed doors') and define desired target behaviors ('feedback is openly addressed in team meetings').
