PURPOSE

Teams tend to refine ideas for too long before testing them, or perceive criticism as destructive. Build it, Break it, Fix it provides a structured framework where rapid building, deliberate challenging, and iterative improvement are understood as a natural triad. This way, weaknesses are discovered and addressed early before they become costly.

HOW TO USE

In the first step (Build it), the team creates a quick prototype or first version of the solution. In the second step (Break it), this prototype is deliberately challenged, tested, and examined for weaknesses. In the third step (Fix it), the identified problems are resolved and the solution is improved before the cycle begins again.

WHAT IT IS

Build it, Break it, Fix it is an iterative validation method consisting of three sequential phases: build, break, and fix. The method originally comes from software security and has been adapted for innovation contexts. It promotes a culture of constructive failure and rapid iteration.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your team has developed a prototype for a new booking app for tradespeople and is excited about it. Using Build it, Break it, Fix it, you deliberately let other team members break the prototype โ€” they find critical usability issues and missing offline functionality. In the Fix phase, these weaknesses are specifically addressed.
