Lean Startup Build-Measure-Learn
Cycle for validated product development.
PURPOSE
Startups and innovation teams frequently waste resources by building products nobody needs. The Build-Measure-Learn cycle minimizes this risk by replacing long planning phases with fast, validated learning cycles. It helps test assumptions early and make decisions based on real data rather than opinions.
HOW TO USE
Teams first formulate a testable hypothesis and define what data they need for validation. Then they build a Minimum Viable Product that tests exactly this hypothesis, measure the results, and learn from them. The cycle is repeated as quickly as possible, with each iteration reducing uncertainty.
WHAT IT IS
Build-Measure-Learn is the central cycle from Eric Ries' Lean Startup methodology. It consists of three phases: Build (an MVP), Measure (customer reactions), and Learn (through data analysis). The framework combines agile development with scientific experimentation and is geared toward maximum learning speed.
EXAMPLE
Example: Your startup has developed an app for sustainable meal planning and you want to test whether users are actually willing to pay for personalized weekly plans. You build a simple landing page with a payment option (Build), measure the conversion rate (Measure), and learn whether the pricing model works (Learn).
