Community Canvas
Canvas for planning community building: purpose, roles, rituals, offerings, and governance.
PURPOSE
The Community Canvas supports the purposeful building and development of communities by bringing all essential design elements together on one surface. It helps clearly define the purpose of a community and create the necessary structures for sustainable engagement. The tool is particularly valuable when communities are to be built strategically rather than growing organically.
HOW TO USE
The canvas is filled out together with the core members or founders of the community. It starts with the purpose and identity of the community before defining roles, rituals, and offerings. Governance rules and communication channels are established to create a binding framework. The canvas is regularly reviewed and adapted as the community evolves.
WHAT IT IS
The Community Canvas is a visual planning tool with fields for all essential elements of a community: purpose, identity, member roles, rituals, offerings, governance, and communication. It is based on the insight that successful communities need deliberately designed structures. The canvas can be used for both new and existing communities.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are founding an internal Community of Practice for data scientists at an insurance corporation. With the Community Canvas, you define the purpose (knowledge sharing), the roles (core team vs. occasional participants), the rituals (monthly show-and-tell), and the governance (decision by consent).
