DMAIC
Six Sigma cycle for process improvement.
PURPOSE
Organizations need to systematically improve processes but often lack a structured approach for data-driven analysis and sustainable problem solving. DMAIC provides a proven cycle that spans from problem definition to improvement control. It prevents treating symptoms instead of root causes and ensures measurable results.
HOW TO USE
In the Define step, the problem is clearly defined and the project scope is delineated. In Measure, relevant data is collected; in Analyze, root causes are identified; in Improve, solutions are developed and implemented; and in Control, the sustainability of improvements is ensured. Each phase has specific tools and completion criteria.
WHAT IT IS
DMAIC is a five-phase problem-solving cycle from the Six Sigma methodology: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control. It is data-driven and aims to reduce process variability and defect rates. The framework has been used in industry for decades and is particularly suited for measurable process improvements.
EXAMPLE
Example: In your production line for electronic components, the scrap rate has been rising for three months and nobody knows the exact cause. You go through the DMAIC cycle: define the problem (Define), measure the current defect rate (Measure), analyze the data and find a correlation with a temperature deviation (Analyze), improve the cooling process (Improve), and establish control mechanisms (Control).
