GAPPS Leadership in Complexity
Competency framework for leadership in complex projects.
PURPOSE
The GAPPS competency framework for Leadership in Complexity is used to define and assess leadership competencies specifically for complex project environments. It addresses the problem that standardized project management competencies are insufficient in complex, uncertain environments and more adaptive leadership capabilities are needed. This enables organizations to specifically develop leaders for demanding project contexts.
HOW TO USE
Use the competency framework as a basis for assessing and developing leaders in complex projects. Identify the relevant competency clusters for your specific context and assess the current capabilities of your leaders. Develop targeted development measures from this and use the framework as a reference for selection processes and succession planning.
WHAT IT IS
The GAPPS (Global Alliance for Project Performance Standards) competency framework for Leadership in Complexity is an international standard for leadership in complex project environments. It defines competency clusters that go beyond classic project management and encompass aspects such as dealing with ambiguity, systems thinking, and adaptive leadership. The standard is distributed by PMA Switzerland, among others, and is compatible with other project management standards.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are leading a complex infrastructure project with many stakeholders and unclear requirements and use the GAPPS competency framework to define the required leadership competencies โ such as dealing with ambiguity, systems thinking, and stakeholder navigation โ for the project leader role. This ensures you select the right person with the right capabilities for this challenge.
