Platform Canvas
Supports business model innovation in platform ecosystems.
PURPOSE
The Platform Canvas is used to systematically develop and analyze business models for platform ecosystems. It addresses the problem that traditional business model tools like the Business Model Canvas are designed for linear value chains and don't adequately capture the multi-sided network effects of platforms. This enables structured development and communication of platform strategies.
HOW TO USE
Fill out the canvas by defining the different sides of your platform: Which user groups do you bring together? What value do you create for each side? How do network effects emerge? Analyze the core interaction your platform enables and define mechanisms for trust-building, curation, and governance. Use the canvas iteratively to refine your platform strategy.
WHAT IT IS
The Platform Canvas is a visual strategy tool for developing and analyzing platform business models. It includes specific fields for multi-sided markets such as user groups (sides), core interaction, network effects, value creation for each side, governance, and monetization. The canvas captures the unique dynamics of platforms that fundamentally differ from linear business models.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are founding an online marketplace for skilled trades and use the Platform Canvas to think through the two market sides (tradespeople and clients), platform value creation (matching, rating system, payment processing), network effects, and monetization strategy in a structured way. This helps you avoid the classic chicken-and-egg problem in platform launches.
