PURPOSE

Organizations need guidance on the order in which to pursue AI initiatives and what maturity stages to expect. The Three Waves of AI Framework provides a clear roadmap showing how AI adoption progresses from efficiency gains through augmentation of human capabilities to full business transformation. This allows companies to plan their AI journey realistically.

HOW TO USE

The model is used as an orientation framework to determine the current state of AI usage in the company and derive next steps. For each of the three waves, specific use cases, required capabilities, and expected outcomes are defined. Teams use the framework to prioritize AI projects along the maturity model.

WHAT IT IS

The Three Waves of AI Framework describes three sequential stages of AI adoption: The first wave focuses on process efficiency and automation, the second on augmentation of human decision-making, and the third on transformative business model innovation. Each wave builds on the capabilities of the previous one. The model serves as a strategic map for AI transformation.

EXAMPLE

Example: You are advising a city administration that wants to start AI projects but doesn't know where to begin. Using the Three Waves of AI Framework, you show that they should first tackle efficiency waves like automated form processing before moving on to more complex AI applications like predictive urban planning.
