User Observations Tool
Captures observations and insights from user research.
PURPOSE
Without systematic user observation, product decisions are often based on assumptions rather than actual behavior. The User Observations Tool helps identify real usage patterns and unspoken needs. It closes the gap between what users say and what they actually do.
HOW TO USE
Observers accompany users in their natural environment and document behaviors, workarounds, and moments of frustration. The results are systematically captured in a structured format and then analyzed by the team. Insights derived from observations serve as the basis for design decisions.
WHAT IT IS
The User Observations Tool is a structured instrument for capturing and analyzing user observations in design research. It is based on the shadowing method from Human-Centered Design and originates from the IDEO Design Kit. The tool provides a format for field notes, observation categories, and the synthesis of findings.
EXAMPLE
Example: You observe customers at the supermarket using the new self-checkout system and systematically document where they hesitate, curse, or abandon the process. The User Observations Tool helps you capture these observations in a structured way and translate them into concrete insights. You discover that 70% of users fail at the payment step because the button is too small.
