PURPOSE

Conventional strategy tools view markets and competition statically and ignore the dynamic evolution of technologies and value chains. Wardley Mapping makes the position and direction of development of each component in the value chain visible. This enables strategic decisions based on a shared situational understanding.

HOW TO USE

The team first identifies user needs and then maps the entire value chain on a chart with two axes: visibility to the user (vertical) and evolutionary stage (horizontal). Each component is positioned as a point and connected with its dependencies. Movements and strategic plays are drawn directly on the map.

WHAT IT IS

Wardley Mapping is a method for strategic situation analysis developed by Simon Wardley. A Wardley Map represents value chain components along two axes: value chain (from invisible to user-facing) and evolution (from Genesis through Custom Built and Product to Commodity). The framework is open source and continuously developed by an active community.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your cloud provider is considering whether to develop its own database engine or continue using open source. With Wardley Mapping, you visualize where database technology stands on the evolution axis โ€” is it still Custom-Built or already Commodity? You realize that developing a proprietary engine would be a waste of money because the market is already moving toward Utility.
