Agile Change Canvas
Minimal canvas for agile change initiatives.
PURPOSE
The Agile Change Canvas is used to plan change initiatives in a lean and iterative way following agile principles. It solves the problem that traditional change management approaches are often too heavy and detailed to keep pace with the dynamics of agile organizations. This enables faster initiation, testing, and adaptation of changes without losing the overview.
HOW TO USE
Fill out the canvas in a short workshop of 30 to 60 minutes. Define the change, the desired target state, the affected people, and the first concrete steps. Keep everything deliberately minimal and avoid detailed long-term planning. Review and update the canvas in regular iterations, similar to a Sprint Backlog in Scrum.
WHAT IT IS
The Agile Change Canvas is a minimal planning tool for change initiatives from the Management 3.0 approach. It reduces change planning to the essential elements: Why the change, What should change, Who is affected, How the first steps look, and When to review. The canvas connects change management fundamentals with agile principles like iteration, minimalism, and fast feedback.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are introducing agile working methods in a traditional HR department and use the Agile Change Canvas to capture the change vision, first experiments (e.g., daily stand-ups instead of weekly status meetings), metrics, and next iteration steps on a lean single page with the team. After two weeks, you review the canvas and adjust course.
