PURPOSE

The Behavioral Impact Canvas addresses a central challenge in change processes: changing human behavior. It helps analyze harmful or undesired behavioral patterns and systematically derive desired behaviors. The tool is particularly valuable when changes need to be anchored not only at the structural and process level but also at the behavioral level.

HOW TO USE

First, current problematic behavioral patterns are identified and their causes analyzed. Then the desired behaviors are defined and the drivers supporting the change are described. Barriers to behavioral change are captured and concrete interventions are planned. The canvas is used iteratively to monitor progress of the behavioral change and adjust measures.

WHAT IT IS

The Behavioral Impact Canvas is a canvas tool that applies principles of behavioral research and behavioral science to change projects. It contains fields for current behavioral patterns, their causes, desired behaviors, drivers of change, and barriers. The tool connects behavioral analysis with concrete intervention planning on a visual workspace.

EXAMPLE

Example: You are introducing a new digital patient record at a hospital and notice that doctors continue to use paper forms. With the Behavioral Impact Canvas, you analyze the barriers (habit, lack of time, fear of technology) and derive targeted nudges to facilitate the transition.
