PURPOSE

The Ethics Canvas helps teams systematically reflect on the ethical dimensions of their innovation and data projects before they become problems. It prevents ethical blind spots that can later lead to reputational damage, loss of user trust, or regulatory consequences. The tool is particularly relevant for data-driven innovations, AI projects, and products with societal impact.

HOW TO USE

The canvas is ideally used early in the innovation process and updated throughout the project. The team identifies affected stakeholder groups and analyzes potential ethical impacts on each group. Critical ethical questions are discussed and risk mitigation measures defined. The canvas serves as a living document consulted during important project decisions.

WHAT IT IS

The Ethics Canvas is a visual reflection tool for systematic analysis of ethical aspects of innovation and data projects. It is structurally modeled on the Business Model Canvas and contains fields for stakeholder groups, ethical impacts, data practices, and risk mitigation measures. The canvas makes ethical considerations visible and discussable that would otherwise remain implicit.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your team is developing an AI-powered application screening tool for a recruiting platform. With the Ethics Canvas, you systematically reflect on which groups could be disadvantaged, what data is used, how transparent decisions are, and what consequences a wrong judgment has.
