PURPOSE

FeedbackWraps are used to formulate feedback in a way that it can be constructively received and acted upon. They solve the problem that feedback is often perceived as criticism because it is unstructured or judgmental. The clear structure ensures that feedback is communicated in an appreciative, specific, and action-oriented manner.

HOW TO USE

Structure your feedback in five steps: 1. Describe the context and your observation. 2. List specific observations. 3. Describe your feelings and reactions. 4. Explain the value or needs behind them. 5. Formulate concrete suggestions for the future. Prepare the feedback in writing and then share it in a personal conversation.

WHAT IT IS

FeedbackWraps is a structured feedback method from Jurgen Appelo's Management 3.0 approach. The format consists of five elements: describe context, list observations, express emotions, explain value, and make suggestions. The name Wrap refers to the idea that feedback is wrapped like a gift to make it easier for the receiving person to accept.

EXAMPLE

Example: You need to give a colleague feedback that her presentations are too text-heavy and use the FeedbackWrap format: you describe the context, your observation (more than 50 words per slide), the emotional impact, your need (clear, visual slides), and a concrete suggestion (maximum 6 words per bullet). This keeps the feedback constructive and solution-oriented.
