Impact Business Model Canvas
Extends the Business Model Canvas with impact elements.
PURPOSE
The Impact Business Model Canvas is used to develop business models that achieve social and ecological impact alongside economic success. It solves the problem that the classic Business Model Canvas has no fields for societal and ecological effects, meaning impact-oriented organizations cannot adequately represent their impact logic. This makes purpose-driven business models systematically plannable.
HOW TO USE
Use the canvas like the classic Business Model Canvas, but add the impact-specific fields. Define the social and ecological impact alongside the economic value proposition. Describe how your activities lead to measurable societal impact and how this impact is measured. Use the canvas to engage impact investors and transparently communicate the impact logic.
WHAT IT IS
The Impact Business Model Canvas is an extension of the classic Business Model Canvas with elements of social and ecological impact measurement. It supplements the nine classic building blocks with fields such as Social and Environmental Impact, Impact Measurement, and Beneficiaries. The canvas was developed for social enterprises, impact startups, and organizations wanting to combine economic success with societal impact.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are developing a social enterprise providing affordable solar solutions for rural communities in Africa and use the Impact Business Model Canvas to explicitly plan social impact (access to clean energy for 10,000 households) and ecological impact (CO2 reduction) alongside classic business model building blocks. This convinces both impact investors and commercial partners.
