PURPOSE

The Mission Model Canvas enables non-profit organizations, NGOs, and mission-driven initiatives to systematically think through their impact logic. It addresses the problem that the classic Business Model Canvas is oriented toward profit generation and therefore does not directly fit organizations with a social or environmental mission. This way, mission-driven organizations can also visualize and communicate their strategy in a structured manner.

HOW TO USE

Use the canvas like the classic Business Model Canvas, but with adapted fields. Replace revenue streams with Mission Achievement and customer segments with Beneficiaries. Work in a team and fill in the fields with sticky notes, starting with the mission and the beneficiaries. Discuss in particular how the success of the mission can be measured and what resources are needed for it.

WHAT IT IS

The Mission Model Canvas is a variant of the Business Model Canvas, developed by Alexander Osterwalder and Steve Blank for non-profit and mission-oriented organizations. It replaces profit-oriented fields like Revenue Streams with mission-specific elements like Mission Achievement/Impact and Beneficiaries. The nine-building-block structure is retained but oriented toward impact rather than profit maximization.

EXAMPLE

Example: You lead a non-profit organization that offers education programs in rural regions and use the Mission Model Canvas to define impact goals instead of revenue streams and beneficiaries instead of customers. This clarifies which stakeholders โ€“ government, donors, local schools โ€“ play which role in your impact model.
