PURPOSE

The IPMA ICB4 is used to systematically define, assess, and develop the individual competencies of project managers. It solves the problem that project management competencies are often reduced to technical skills while behavioral and contextual competencies are neglected. This creates a holistic competency profile that serves as the foundation for certifications and professional development.

HOW TO USE

Use the ICB4 as a reference framework for self-assessment or peer assessment of project managers. Evaluate competencies in all three areas: People, Practice, and Perspective. Identify strengths and development areas and create an individual development plan from these. The ICB4 also serves as the foundation for preparation for IPMA certifications at Levels A through D.

WHAT IT IS

The IPMA Individual Competence Baseline 4 (ICB4) is the international competence standard of the International Project Management Association for individuals in project management. It defines 29 competence elements in three areas: People (personal and social competencies), Practice (technical project management competencies), and Perspective (contextual competencies). The ICB4 forms the foundation for the globally recognized IPMA certification system.

EXAMPLE

Example: You are preparing for the IPMA Level C certification and use the ICB4 to systematically assess your competencies in the three areas: People (leadership, teamwork), Practice (scope, time, cost, risk), and Perspective (strategy, governance). You recognize that you need to specifically gain experience in stakeholder management.
