Platform Navigator
Framework for developing and analyzing platform business models and ecosystems.
PURPOSE
Platform business models follow a fundamentally different logic than traditional linear business models, and classic analysis tools fall short. The Platform Navigator provides a specialized framework for analyzing and developing platforms and multi-sided markets. It helps you systematically address the unique dynamics such as network effects and chicken-and-egg problems.
HOW TO USE
You analyze the platform based on its core elements: participant groups, value propositions for each side, transaction types, channels, revenue streams, and governance mechanisms. Special attention is given to identifying and strengthening network effects. The Navigator also helps solve the chicken-and-egg problem when launching a new platform.
WHAT IT IS
The Platform Navigator is a framework from the BMI Lab at the University of St. Gallen, specifically developed for analyzing and designing platform business models. It accounts for the specifics of multi-sided markets such as network effects, matchmaking, and platform governance. The framework extends the classic Business Model Navigator with platform-specific dimensions.
EXAMPLE
Example: Your company wants to build a B2B platform that connects trades businesses with material suppliers. Using the Platform Navigator, you analyze the key elements: Who are the platform sides? What is the core interaction? How do you solve the chicken-and-egg problem? You realize that you need to build the supply side first with exclusive supplier discounts.
