Retrospective Patterns
Collection of various retrospective formats for diverse and engaging team reflection.
PURPOSE
Retrospectives are a central element of agile work, but they quickly become monotonous when the same format is always used, leading to declining participation and superficial insights. The Retrospective Patterns offer a variety of different formats that provide variety and illuminate different aspects of collaboration. This keeps reflection lively and effective.
HOW TO USE
The facilitator selects an appropriate retrospective format from the collection based on team dynamics, the current topic, and experience level. Common formats include Sailboat, Start-Stop-Continue, 4Ls (Liked, Learned, Lacked, Longed For), or Mad-Sad-Glad. The chosen format is prepared, the retrospective is conducted, and the agreed-upon actions are documented.
WHAT IT IS
Retrospective Patterns are a curated collection of different formats and structures for team retrospectives. Each pattern offers a different approach to reflection, whether through metaphors, playful elements, or structured questioning techniques. The collection includes both simple formats for beginners and more complex variants for experienced teams.
EXAMPLE
Example: Your Scrum team has been doing the same 'What went well / What went badly' retrospective for six months and energy is declining. Using the Retrospective Patterns, you choose new formats like 'Sailboat' or 'Timeline' and bring fresh energy to team reflection, suddenly uncovering new improvement ideas.
