PURPOSE

Many organizations introduce agile methods without knowing what maturity level they should aim for. The Agile Fluency Model helps teams realistically assess their current state and consciously decide which fluency zone they want to reach. It prevents agile transformations from running aimlessly or creating unrealistic expectations.

HOW TO USE

Teams reflect together on which of the four fluency zones they currently occupy. Then they discuss which zone should be targeted and what investments are needed. Based on this assessment, targeted development measures are planned.

WHAT IT IS

The Agile Fluency Model describes four zones of agile maturity: Focusing (teamwork), Delivering (technical excellence), Optimizing (market orientation), and Strengthening (organizational design). Each zone requires specific investments in skills, structures, and support. The model was developed by Diana Larsen and James Shore and emphasizes that not every team needs to reach the highest zone.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your development team has been doing Scrum for two years, but results are barely better than before – you deliver regularly but not the right things. With the Agile Fluency Model, you recognize that you're stuck in the Focusing zone and need to make the leap to the Delivering zone. This targets your development at the right agile capabilities.
