Storytelling Canvas
Develops culturally impactful stories.
PURPOSE
Facts alone rarely move people to change; stories, however, create emotional connection and cultural resonance. The Storytelling Canvas helps structure stories so that they convey cultural values and foster willingness to change. It turns storytelling from an intuitive ability into a learnable craft.
HOW TO USE
In the canvas, the target audience, core message, and desired impact are first defined. Then the story is structured along the elements of hero, challenge, turning point, and transformation. Finally, the story is tested within the team and reviewed for its cultural effectiveness.
WHAT IT IS
The Storytelling Canvas is a visual worksheet for the systematic development of impactful stories. It contains fields for context, protagonists, conflict, turning point, resolution, and core message. The canvas format makes it possible to work through the elements of good stories in a structured way, rather than relying on spontaneous inspiration.
EXAMPLE
Example: Your change team needs to explain to the entire organization why the transition to a new ERP system is necessary โ but the previous PowerPoint presentation with numbers and timelines convinced nobody. You use the Storytelling Canvas to develop a story that begins with the experience of a frustrated clerk and shows how the new system concretely improves her daily work.
