PURPOSE

The Transformative Theory of Change Canvas helps organizations and initiatives develop an impact-oriented change logic that aims beyond superficial outputs at deep systemic transformation. It bridges the gap between visions of great change and the concrete planning of levers and impact chains. The tool is particularly relevant for initiatives targeting systemic societal or organizational change.

HOW TO USE

The canvas is filled out in a workshop with the initiative's core actors. First, the context and systemic causes of the problem are analyzed. Then the transformative levers through which change is to be effected are identified. Finally, the involved actors, their roles, and the desired outcomes are defined to create a traceable impact chain.

WHAT IT IS

The Transformative Theory of Change Canvas is a visual planning tool that structures the development of a transformative change theory on one workspace. It contains fields for context, systemic levers, actors and their roles, and desired outcomes at various levels. The canvas differs from classic Theory of Change models through its explicit focus on transformative, systemic change.

EXAMPLE

Example: You are developing a Theory of Change for a national program for school digitalization. With the Transformative Theory of Change Canvas, you work out the context (education system, political framework), the levers (teacher training, infrastructure), the actors, and the desired outcomes across three time horizons.
