PURPOSE

Organizations need clarity about which capabilities they possess and which they need to build. The Capability Map helps make strategic investment decisions based on existing and missing capabilities. It makes visible where differentiation succeeds and where there is catching up to do.

HOW TO USE

First, all relevant capabilities of the organization are identified and grouped in a hierarchical structure. Then these capabilities are assessed in terms of their maturity level and strategic importance. From this, targeted investment and development priorities can be derived.

WHAT IT IS

The Capability Map is a strategic framework that systematically captures and visualizes organizational capabilities. It organizes capabilities into categories such as core capabilities, supporting capabilities, and strategic capabilities. The result is a map that serves as the basis for resource allocation and strategic planning.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your company is planning to enter the e-commerce market and you need to find out which capabilities (e.g., logistics, data analytics, UX design) already exist and which still need to be built. With the Capability Map, you visualize all organizational capabilities on an overview map and specifically identify the gaps that need to be closed for the new strategy.
