Career Canvas
Structured career planning and development conversations.
PURPOSE
Career conversations between managers and employees often lack structure and remain superficial. The Career Canvas provides a structured framework to collaboratively develop career goals, strengths, development areas, and concrete next steps. It turns career planning from a vague intention into a concrete, visual plan.
HOW TO USE
The employee first fills out the canvas independently, reflecting on their strengths, interests, values, and career goals. Then the canvas is discussed and further developed in a development conversation with their manager. Concrete development measures and milestones are agreed upon and reviewed regularly.
WHAT IT IS
The Career Canvas is based on the concept of Business Model You and applies the logic of the Business Model Canvas to personal career planning. It includes fields for key resources, key activities, value proposition, customers (employers/clients), and other career-relevant aspects. The tool is suitable for both self-reflection and structured development conversations.
EXAMPLE
Example: One of your employees has been on the team for 3 years and feels stuck professionally. With the Career Canvas, you work together on her strengths, interests, development goals, and possible career paths. You discover that she's passionate about UX design and plan concrete steps: an internal placement in the design team and further training.
