Kudo Cards
Recognition cards for intrinsic motivation through peer-to-peer praise.
PURPOSE
Kudo Cards are used to foster a culture of appreciation and recognition within the team. They address the problem that positive feedback often falls short in daily work and achievements go unnoticed. Through peer-to-peer recognition, intrinsic motivation is strengthened and the team climate is sustainably improved.
HOW TO USE
Make the Kudo Cards available to the entire team, either at a central location or digitally. Any team member can write a card to another person at any time to acknowledge a specific achievement, help, or exemplary behavior. The cards can be handed over personally, pinned to a Kudo Board, or read aloud in team meetings. It is important that the recognition is specific and sincere.
WHAT IT IS
Kudo Cards are a recognition tool from Jurgen Appelo's Management 3.0 approach. They are pre-designed cards with various categories of recognition that team members can give to each other. The tool is based on the principle of peer-to-peer recognition and differs from traditional reward systems through its informal, voluntary, and intrinsically motivating character.
EXAMPLE
Example: You hang a box of colorful Kudo Cards in the team room and encourage your 12-person development team to thank each other for special achievements โ for instance, a backend developer writes a card to a QA colleague for finding a critical bug before the release. During the retro, you read the cards aloud and celebrate the successes together.
