PURPOSE

The Co-design Canvas enables the participatory design of solutions, products, or services together with the affected users and stakeholders. It ensures that co-design processes do not proceed arbitrarily but are structured along clear principles such as inclusivity, participation, and adaptivity. This achieves better outcomes and increases acceptance of the developed solutions.

HOW TO USE

The canvas is used at the beginning of a co-design process to establish principles, participants, and the approach. Participants jointly define who will be involved, which methods will be used, and how results will be documented. The included example case illustrates practical application. Throughout the process, the canvas serves as an orientation framework and is iteratively adapted.

WHAT IT IS

The Co-design Canvas is a structured canvas tool for planning and conducting participatory design processes. It is based on three core principles: inclusive, participatory, and adaptive. The tool contains fields for participants, principles, methods, documentation, and success criteria, and is supplemented by a concrete example case.

EXAMPLE

Example: You are developing a new citizen app for your city administration and want to directly involve citizens. With the Co-design Canvas, you plan three participatory workshops, define inclusive principles (accessibility, multilingualism), and document the prototype feedback process.
