PURPOSE

Conventional meeting formats often lead to unequal participation, groupthink, or ineffective discussions. Liberating Structures replace these dysfunctional patterns with participatory micro-structures that activate all participants. They make it possible to conduct productive conversations even in large groups and leverage collective intelligence.

HOW TO USE

The facilitator selects from 33 available structures the one matching the question and group size. Each structure has clear rules for invitation, room setup, time intervals, and participant formation. Structures can be used individually or combined into longer workshop dramaturgy.

WHAT IT IS

Liberating Structures are a collection of 33 participatory interaction formats developed by Henri Lipmanowicz and Keith McCandless. Each structure is precisely described with purpose, procedure, time requirements, and materials. The formats range from simple pair conversations (1-2-4-All) to complex strategy processes (Ecocycle Planning) and are available under a Creative Commons license.

EXAMPLE

Example: In your department meeting, the same three people always talk while 20 others remain silent – even though the best ideas often come from the quiet ones. With Liberating Structures like 1-2-4-All, you first give each individual think time, then pairs, then groups of four, until all voices are heard. In 15 minutes, you get more ideas than in an hour of traditional meetings.
