PURPOSE

The Sustainability Canvas helps organizations translate sustainability from an abstract goal into concrete operational measures. It addresses the frequent challenge that sustainability strategies exist on paper but are not implemented in daily operations. The tool creates a connection between stakeholder expectations, governance structures, operational processes, and continuous learning loops.

HOW TO USE

The canvas is filled out by an interdisciplinary team representing different organizational perspectives. First, relevant stakeholders and their sustainability expectations are captured. Then governance structures and operational measures addressing these expectations are defined. Finally, learning loops are established to measure progress and continuously adapt the strategy.

WHAT IT IS

The Sustainability Canvas is a visual planning tool for operationalizing sustainability in organizations. It contains four central areas: stakeholders and their expectations, governance structures, operational implementation, and learning loops. The canvas connects strategic sustainability goals with concrete measures and feedback mechanisms on one workspace.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your company has a sustainability strategy in the annual report, but operationally little is happening. With the Sustainability Canvas, you translate the abstract goals into concrete stakeholder responsibilities, operational measures in supply chain and production, and learning loops for quarterly reviews.
