Team Canvas
Visualizes team purpose, values, goals, roles, and rules.
PURPOSE
The Team Canvas is used to create a shared understanding of purpose, goals, values, and roles within a team. It solves the problem that teams often collaborate without explicit agreements and fundamental questions like 'Why do we exist?' and 'What do we want to achieve?' remain unanswered. This creates a common foundation that provides orientation and strengthens collaboration.
HOW TO USE
Conduct a workshop with the entire team and fill in the fields together, ideally on a large poster or whiteboard. Start with the team purpose and work your way through goals, values, roles and skills, to rules and activities. Ensure that every team member contributes their perspective. Hang the completed canvas visibly in the team room.
WHAT IT IS
The Team Canvas is a strategic alignment tool developed by Alex Ivanov and Mitya Voloshchuk. It consists of five core fields: Purpose, Goals, Values, Roles and Skills, and Rules and Activities. The one-page canvas format makes it possible to present the essential aspects of team alignment compactly and visually.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are founding a new product team and facilitate a half-day workshop with the Team Canvas, in which you jointly formulate the team purpose, align personal goals, clarify roles, establish values, and agree on collaboration rules. The completed canvas then hangs visibly in the team room and is jointly reviewed every six weeks.
