Operating Model Canvas
Defines processes, organization, locations, and IT.
PURPOSE
The Operating Model Canvas is used to structurally analyze and design the operating model of an organization. It closes the gap between strategy and operational execution by making visible how an organization actually implements its strategy. This way, inconsistencies between strategic ambition and operational reality can be identified and resolved.
HOW TO USE
Analyze the six dimensions of the canvas for your organization: processes, organization, locations, information, suppliers, and management system. Assess the current state for each dimension and define the desired target state. Identify the largest gaps and prioritize improvement measures. Use the canvas as a foundation for reorganization projects and IT transformations.
WHAT IT IS
The Operating Model Canvas is a tool for visualizing and designing the operating model of an organization. It typically encompasses six dimensions: Processes (business processes), Organization (organizational structure), Locations, Information (IT and data), Suppliers (suppliers and partners), and Management System (governance system). The canvas was developed by Andrew Campbell and colleagues and connects strategic planning with operational design.
EXAMPLE
Example: You are tasked with redesigning the operational organization of an insurance company after a merger and use the Operating Model Canvas to map processes (claims handling), organization (regional vs. central structure), locations, IT systems (legacy migration), and suppliers on a single page. This way, you quickly identify the greatest synergies and integration risks.
