PURPOSE

The Internal Communication Canvas helps communication managers strategically plan internal communication instead of treating it as an operational routine. It addresses the problem that internal communication is often reactive and unsystematic, leading to information gaps and misunderstandings. The tool creates a strategic foundation for effective internal communication.

HOW TO USE

The canvas is filled out jointly by communication managers and relevant stakeholders. First, the target audiences of internal communication are identified and their information needs analyzed. Then goals, key messages, and appropriate channels are defined. The canvas is regularly reviewed and adapted to changing requirements.

WHAT IT IS

The Internal Communication Canvas is a visual planning tool for the strategic design of internal communication. It contains fields for internal stakeholder groups, communication goals, key messages, channels, and success indicators. The canvas brings all essential elements of an internal communication strategy together on one clear workspace.

EXAMPLE

Example: Your company is merging with a competitor and you need to plan internal communication for 3,000 employees. With the Internal Communication Canvas, you define stakeholder groups (executives, works council, teams), key messages, timing, and channels – from town halls to intranet articles.
